## What is an LP database: the investors behind PE and VC funds

**Limited partner (LP):** an investor that commits money to a private equity or venture fund and leaves the investing to the fund manager, the general partner (GP).\
**LP database:** a list of those investors: what they back, where they are and who to contact.\
**Why fund managers use one:** to build a target list before a fundraise, and to see which LPs have fresh money to commit.\
**What it is not:** a list of fund managers. A GP raises money; an LP gives it. Many firms do both: Adams Street and Pantheon invest in other funds and raise their own from pension funds and insurers.

## How emerging managers find LPs

**Start with money aimed at new managers:** [Accolade Partners](https://privateequitylist.com/investors/accolade-partners) targets seed and Series A managers and emerging managers; [Inception Capital](https://privateequitylist.com/investors/inception-capital) runs an emerging manager fund of funds.\
**Look for first-fund specialists:** [Pritzker Alternative Strategies](https://privateequitylist.com/investors/pritzker-alternative-strategies) backs managers raising funds I–III and [raised nearly $385M for its own first fund](https://vcwire.tech/2026/03/26/pritzker-alternative-strategies-raises-nearly-385m-inaugural-fund/). In Prague, [Aspire11](https://privateequitylist.com/investors/aspire11) commits €10–50M through emerging managers from a [€515M pension-backed fund](https://fundmomentum.vc/blog/aspire11-100m-deployed-515m-pension-backed-fund-eternals-tribes-2026).\
**Add state-backed funds of funds:** the European Investment Fund and Jada invest in venture and private equity funds to grow their regions.\
**Then family offices:** many write smaller commitments than institutions; the biggest names are in our guide to [top family offices](https://privateequitylist.com/intelligence/top-family-offices).\
**Know what secondaries funds do:** Pantheon, Adams Street and Netley also buy existing fund stakes. That gives your current LPs liquidity; it is not the same as a new commitment.\
**Track who just raised:** an LP with a new fund of funds has capital to commit. The [new funds tracker](https://privateequitylist.com/new-vc-funds) lists each fund as it is announced.

## FAQ

### What is an LP database?

An LP database lists limited partners, the investors that commit money to private equity and venture funds, with what they back, where they are and who to contact. Private Equity List profiles 514 of them: 295 fund-of-funds managers and 228 family offices.

### What is a limited partner?

A limited partner (LP) is an investor that commits money to a private equity or venture fund and leaves the investing to the fund manager, the general partner. Pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, insurers, funds of funds and family offices are the main types.

### How do I find LPs for my first fund?

Start with investors that back new managers, such as Accolade Partners, Inception Capital, Pritzker Alternative Strategies and Aspire11, then state-backed funds of funds like the European Investment Fund and family offices. Filter Private Equity List by type and country and check the new funds tracker for LPs that just raised.

### Is there a free LP database?

Private Equity List profiles and directory pages are free to read; investment-team contacts come with the Pro plan at $129 a month. Preqin and PitchBook, which add LP commitment histories, are sold on annual contracts with reported prices from about $15,000 a year.

### What is the difference between an LP and a GP?

The general partner (GP) runs the fund: it raises money, picks investments and manages them. Limited partners (LPs) provide most of the money and have limited liability and no say in individual deals. Firms such as Adams Street and Pantheon act as both: they invest in other funds and raise their own.
