Single-family office vs multi-family office
| Single-family office | Multi-family office | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it serves | One family and its trusts | Many families, often with similar needs |
| Who owns it | The family | Its partners, a bank or an investment group |
| Cost | The family pays the whole team | Families share the team and pay fees |
| Privacy and control | Full control, little disclosure | Less control, more standard reporting |
| How it invests | Often direct deals and long holds | Mostly portfolios built for each client |
| Examples | Walton Enterprises, Bezos Expeditions, DFO Management, KIRKBI | Bessemer Trust, Glenmede, Bedrock Group, Spudy & Co. |
Which one founders meet: single-family offices write direct cheques into companies. Multi-family offices more often manage portfolios for clients, so fewer of them back private companies directly.

Direct and alongside funds: 132 of the 228 family offices in Private Equity List also invest as venture capital investors, and 108 as private equity investors.
Cheque sizes: $10–50M is the most common bracket, with 81 family offices. 40 write $100M or more, and 24 write under $1M.
Long holding periods: Pritzker Private Capital describes its capital base as long-duration. KIRKBI is the holding company for LEGO and manages other investments beside it.
Startups: Bezos Expeditions lists Airbnb and Uber among its investments. Thirty 5 Ventures, Kevin Durant's office, has backed more than 100 startups.
Debt as well as equity: founders who would rather borrow than sell shares can compare lenders in our guide to private credit funds and firms.
How to find and approach family offices
Start with the list: the family offices list holds the profiles of every family office in Private Equity List.
Filter by fit: in search, filter by investor type, country, cheque size and sector. A $2M seed round and a $50M buyout need different offices.
Check what they already own: profiles list portfolio companies and stages. An office that backed three software companies will read a software pitch faster.
Expect a relationship first: single-family offices often prefer private, introduction-led deals. A warm introduction from a banker, lawyer or portfolio founder beats a cold email.
Show what they look for: business model, management quality, growth, profitability, valuation, exit options and long-term fit with the family's interests.
Write a short first email: our investor outreach email templates cover a first note to an investor.
