Top Private Equity Firms in Colorado

Colorado's private equity list is built around two clusters, Boulder and Denver, and it leans toward credit and venture. CRG, a Boulder healthcare investor, says it has managed more than $4 billion of institutional capital through credit and select equity, ArrowMark Partners in Denver says it manages about $19.5 billion, and most of the other listings are venture funds that back technology, impact, sports, and cannabis companies.

The directory above lists the Colorado firms Private Equity List tracks and filters them by sector, stage, and check size. The ten profiles below start with the large managers and move toward early-stage investors, and each says plainly what the firm does.

1. CRG

CRG is a healthcare-focused investment firm that Charles Tate founded in 2003. It is headquartered in Boulder with additional offices in Houston and New York, and it says it has managed more than $4 billion of institutional capital, mostly as senior secured loans plus select equity investments.

It offers flexible growth capital to companies in consumer health, life sciences, healthcare services, and healthcare IT, so a healthcare company that wants debt or a mix of debt and equity can start the conversation here.

2. ArrowMark Partners

ArrowMark Partners is an employee-owned Denver manager founded in 2007 that says it oversees about $19.5 billion, mostly in alternative credit and commercial real estate lending. It also runs equity strategies and a collateralized loan obligation platform, and it suits sponsors and borrowers that need structured financing.

3. Boulder Ventures

Boulder Ventures has invested in early-stage information technology and life sciences companies since 1995. Founder and General Partner Kyle Lefkoff co-founded Array BioPharma, and the firm works in two regions, the Colorado Front Range and the Mid-Atlantic. Its eighth fund closed at $58 million in 2022.

Check sizes typically run $1-3 million, and it likes to be the first institutional money into a company that has deep technical or scientific expertise.

A Front Range software or biotechnology founder with early traction will find the longest local track record here.

4. Access Venture Partners

Access Venture Partners is a Colorado early-stage fund founded in 1999 that invests in technology startups at seed and Series A across the Mountain West. Brian Wallace is among its managing partners, and its fifth fund is listed at $47 million.

It focuses on software as a service, cybersecurity, and marketplace models, and prefers to be the first institutional check for regional companies rather than competing for coastal deals.

5. AI Capital

AI Capital is a Denver venture firm that backs revenue-stage enterprise software companies using applied artificial intelligence, with a second fund listed at $17 million. Portfolio companies include Cynch AI, Syndesis Health, and Brightpick.

6. Colorado Impact Fund

Colorado Impact Fund backs Colorado businesses that improve their communities, in clean energy, education, healthcare, natural foods, and technology. It manages about $80 million across its funds, with initial investments of $500,000 to $2 million, and it is the only listing here that invests only in the state.

7. Black Lab Sports

Black Lab Sports is a Boulder venture firm and incubator founded in 2014 by Jean-Paul O'Brien, a former Division I athlete with an aerospace engineering background. It invests in sports technology, human technology, and wellness, and its early-stage arm, Black Lab X, backs companies in themes such as longevity and community.

Portfolio companies include Uplift Labs, Link My Ride, Svexa, and Dynepic, and the firm often co-invests alongside other seed funds.

A founder in athlete performance, wearable sensing, or wellness will find an investor that works in that niche every day.

8. Canopy Boulder

Canopy Boulder is a seed-stage accelerator and investment fund founded in 2014 for companies building products and services around the legal cannabis industry, with CBD and hemp companies also eligible. It had launched 63 businesses and made nearly 80 investments by 2018, and in 2019 it raised a $4 million accelerator fund that offered $130,000 per company.

A cannabis-adjacent software, packaging, or services founder wanting mentorship alongside a seed check fits its program.

9. BITKRAFT Esports Ventures

BITKRAFT Esports Ventures describes itself as the first and most active esports investment fund, and Founding General Partner Malte Barth and Founding Partner Jens Hilgers lead it. It invests in early and growth-stage esports companies worldwide and builds companies alongside corporate partners.

10. Arc Capital

Arc Capital backs early-stage, AI-enabled companies in the Middle East and North Africa, led by Managing Partners Nidal Qanadilo and Steve Finikiotis. It is relevant to founders digitizing large sectors in that region and to co-investors there, and it does not target Colorado companies.

Let's Recap

Colorado splits into capital providers and early-stage backers. CRG and ArrowMark lend and manage large pools of capital, ordered here from healthcare credit to broader credit and real estate. Boulder Ventures, Access Venture Partners, AI Capital, and Colorado Impact Fund back technology and impact companies in the state, and Black Lab Sports and Canopy Boulder serve sports technology and cannabis founders.

BITKRAFT and Arc Capital invest globally rather than locally.

For practical targeting:

  • Healthcare companies seeking credit or a mix of debt and select equity: CRG
  • Front Range software and biotechnology founders with early traction: Boulder Ventures
  • Mountain West software, cybersecurity, and marketplace startups at seed: Access Venture Partners
  • Revenue-stage enterprise software companies using applied AI: AI Capital
  • Colorado founders with a community or impact mission: Colorado Impact Fund
  • Sports technology, human performance, and wellness founders: Black Lab Sports
  • Cannabis-adjacent startups wanting an accelerator plus seed capital: Canopy Boulder

Filter by city as well as sector, since Colorado's list splits between Boulder and Denver and several firms invest outside the state.

Colorado's 25 listings are spread across Boulder, Denver, and the wider Front Range. Private Equity List's API and MCP tools let you pull them by city, stage, and check size into one sheet and drop the ones that invest elsewhere.
