Top Private Equity Firms in North Carolina
North Carolina's private equity map is smaller than its reputation, and it is concentrated. Between March and September 2025, three Charlotte firms closed funds totaling more than $7 billion: Pamlico Capital at $1.75 billion, Falfurrias at $1.35 billion, and Ridgemont Equity Partners at $3.975 billion. The directory also files a Raleigh money manager and a Shanghai growth investor under the state.
The directory above lists the North Carolina firms Private Equity List tracks and filters them by sector, stage, and check size. The six profiles below compare them by company size and sector so you can see which one fits first. For deeper profiles of the four Charlotte buyout firms, see the Charlotte page.
1. Ridgemont Equity Partners
Ridgemont Equity Partners is the state's largest buyout firm. Its fifth fund, closed at a $3.975 billion hard cap in September 2025, is about 70 percent larger than the $2.35 billion Fund IV it raised in 2022, and the firm now manages more than $11 billion.
A team of 57 professionals, including 20 partners, buys middle-market business services, healthcare, and industrial companies in the United States and Canada.
At that scale it suits management teams that want a large, sector-focused partner, and it sits well above the lower middle market firms that follow.
2. Pamlico Capital
Pamlico Capital sits one step down from Ridgemont, in the lower middle market, and targets companies with enterprise values of $50-350 million. Enterprise value is a company's total price including debt, and it is how these firms size a deal.
Its sixth fund closed at a $1.75 billion hard cap in March 2025 after a $1.4 billion fifth fund in 2020. The sectors are business and technology services, communications, and healthcare, and the firm has said it intends to stay in that lane.
3. Falfurrias Capital Partners
Falfurrias targets smaller companies than Pamlico, typically investing $5-40 million per company, and raised $850 million for Fund V in 2021 before closing Fund VI at $1.35 billion in 2025. It invests in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Its focus is government and business services, food manufacturing, and industrial technology, with a separate growth fund for software and business services. Of the four buyout firms in the state, it is the one to start with for a food or government services company.
4. Carousel Capital Management
Carousel Capital is the regional specialist. Founded in 1996, it focuses on the Southeastern United States and has managed more than $2 billion of commitments across six funds, investing in business services, consumer products and services, and healthcare services.
It does not give a typical check size, so ask directly. A Southeastern owner who values a local relationship over fund scale is the natural fit.
5. Anchor Capital
Anchor Capital is a Raleigh firm, founded in 2008, that appears under private equity but does not run a conventional buyout strategy. Public records describe it as a hedge fund manager with an alternative long-only approach to publicly traded companies, and the directory lists an income fund.
It is relevant to investors in listed securities, not to private companies seeking a buyout partner, so confirm its mandate before approaching.
6. Trustbridge Partners
Trustbridge Partners is listed under North Carolina, but it is a growth equity firm that Li Shujun founded in 2006 with offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Boston, investing in China and Southeast Asia. It says it manages about $5 billion, including for university endowments, and led a $500 million Series B in WeWork China in 2018.
It matters to growth-stage companies in Asia and to institutional investors seeking Asian exposure, and it has no North Carolina mandate.

Ridgemont, Pamlico, and Falfurrias are the Charlotte buyout leaders, ordered by company size from the largest to the smallest, and Carousel is the Southeast specialist.
