Profile
The UK Government has launched a deep tech venture capital fund called the Sovereign AI Fund, operating within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. This initiative focuses on sovereignty and technological capability, distinguishing itself by taking equity stakes in strategically significant AI companies. Chaired by James Wise, a partner at Balderton Capital, the fund aspires to leverage his experience while relying on a specialized team within DSIT. The Sovereign AI Fund integrates governmental reach with venture discipline, aiming to capture equity upside while retaining sovereignty over critical tech sectors.
The Sovereign AI Fund targets companies involved in AI infrastructure, foundation models, defence, regulated-sector AI, biological foundation models, and synthetic biology. Positioned to act as the most active UK VC for sovereign AI from seed to Series B, it operates alongside a separate £282 million R&D funding call for datasets, foundation models, and compute infrastructure. UK-based or UK-linked startups, especially those within dual-use areas of importance to national security, are the primary recipients of its support. It focuses on tangible equity investments, extending up to £30 million plus substantial compute allocations.
Notable portfolio investments include Callosum, Prima Mente, Doubleword, Cosine, Cursive, Odyssey, and Twig Bio, which underscore its focus on AI advancements and infrastructure. By tying equity with resource commitment and procurement pipelines, the fund provides a unique model that could reshape how government and private entities collaborate on tech advancement in the UK and deepen strategic sector impacts.
